What is Anion Gap Blood Test?

An Anion Gap Blood Test measures the difference between positively charged electrolytes (cations) and negatively charged electrolytes (anions) in your blood. The test is calculated using the results of other electrolyte tests, primarily sodium, chloride, and bicarbonate (CO₂). Although not a direct measurement, the anion gap helps healthcare providers evaluate your body’s acid-base balance and identify whether there are excess acids in the bloodstream. Too much acid in the blood is called acidosis. If the blood is too basic it’s called alkalosis.

It helps diagnose and monitor conditions such as metabolic acidosis, kidney disease, uncontrolled diabetes, dehydration, and certain poisonings or drug overdoses. Preparation

  • Preparing for an Anion Gap Blood Test is generally simple.

Collection

With potassium: 8–16 mEq/L

What Happens if Test Results Show Abnormal Levels?

Low Anion Gap
A low anion gap is less common and may occur due to:

  • Low blood albumin levels (hypoalbuminaemia)

  • Laboratory error or testing variation
  • Increased levels of certain positively charged minerals or medications
  • If a low anion gap is detected, your healthcare provider may repeat the test or order additional investigations to identify the underlying cause.
