What is the Growth Hormone Test?

Growth Hormone (GH) is also called somatotropin and is a peptide hormone that is secreted by the pituitary gland. It has many roles in growth, metabolism and cellular function. GH is involved in bone and muscle growth, the regulation of fat metabolism and the maintenance of ideal body composition.

GH is necessary for growth in childhood and the control of height and development. It also has a role in adult life, regulating fat distribution, muscle strength, and bone density. The hormone is secreted in pulses, particularly during deep sleep, and its production decreases with age. GH also interacts with Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1), a protein that mediates many of the actions of growth hormone.

Dysfunction in the levels of GH may lead to several health issues. Growth Hormone Deficiency (GHD) is characterized by slowed growth in children and metabolic problems in adults. On the other hand, Growth Hormone excess leads to Acromegaly, a condition that is characterized by abnormal bone growth in the hands, feet, and face. These hormones are very important in the control of physical development and general health.

How is the Test Performed?

The Growth Hormone test involves the simple withdrawal of the blood often performed in the morning;

Preparation

  • Patients are advised to fast for 8 to 12 hours before the test.
  • Avoid vigorous exercise for at least 24 hours before the test.
  • Inform any medication you are taking that might interfere with the test results.

Collection

  • A trained phlebotomist uses a needle to draw blood from the vein and then transfer it to the tube.

Lab analysis

  • The sample is then analyzed in the laboratory using immunoassay techniques.

What are the symptoms that prompt this test?

If you have any symptoms that suggest a possible GH imbalance, your healthcare provider may advise a Growth Hormone test.

Symptoms in Children

  • Growth delay
  • Short stature
  • Weak bones
  • Delay in tooth development
  • Excessive fat accumulation around the waist
  • Delayed puberty or failure to develop secondary characters

Symptoms in Adolescents

  • Cessation of growth comparatively earlier
  • Fatigue
  • Poor development of muscle

Symptoms in Adults

  • Decreased stamina
  • Reduced bone density
  • Reduction in muscle mass
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Memory issues
  • Difficulty concentrating

What are Normal Ranges for This Test?

The normal range for Growth Hormone levels differs with age, sex, and the blood test method used. The generally accepted normal ranges are;

Male – 05 to 3 ng/mL
Female – 05 to 8 ng/mL

**The values mentioned above are given according to the assay of the test, time of the day, and medical condition of an individual.**

What Happens if Test Results Show Abnormal Levels?

Abnormal levels of Growth Hormone indicate that the person is affected by an underlying medical condition mentioned. below;

Elevated levels of Growth Hormone

  • Pituitary tumor
  • Acromegaly

Low Levels of Growth Hormone

  • Genetic defects
  • Brain damage
  • Autoimmune conditions
  • Chronic stress
  • Tumors
  • Idiopathic causes

If abnormalities are diagnosed further testing is suggested and continuous monitoring of thyroid levels is crucial for the management of the disease.
