How is the Test Performed?

Preparation

What are Normal Ranges for This Test?

Unlike routine cholesterol tests, there is no single universally accepted lipoprotein (a) blood test normal range. Results may be reported in milligrams per decilitre (mg/dL) or nanomoles per litre (nmol/L), and the interpretation depends on the laboratory method used.
Commonly used reference values include:
Less than 30 mg/dL (or less than 75 nmol/L): Generally considered desirable or associated with a lower cardiovascular risk.
Greater than 31 to less than 50 mg/dL (75–125 nmol/L): May indicate an intermediate cardiovascular risk.
Greater than 50 mg/dL (greater than 125 nmol/L): Generally associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Low or Normal Lipoprotein(a) Levels

A low or normal Lp(a) level generally indicates that lipoprotein(a) is unlikely to be a significant contributor to your cardiovascular risk. However, this does not eliminate the possibility of developing heart disease, as other factors such as cholesterol levels, diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking, obesity, and family history also play important roles.
