What Is A Triglyceride Test?

Triglyceride is a type of fat (lipid) found in the blood. Triglycerides are a major source of energy in the body but elevated levels can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and other health problems. The Triglyceride Test is a blood test that measure the specific levels of triglycerides in blood stream. The test is often performed as a part of a lipid panel, which also measures cholesterol levels (HDL, LDL and total cholesterol). It is used to assess cardiovascular health, monitor the effectiveness of treatments for high cholesterol and evaluate the risk of metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions that increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes and stroke.

High triglyceride levels can result from factors such as a high-fat diet, lack of physical activity, obesity, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption or underlying medical conditions like diabetes or hypothyroidism. The test is recommended for adults as part of routine health checkups especially for those with risk factors for heart disease.

How is the Test Performed?

Preparation
Fasting for 9-12 hours is recommended before taking the test.

Sample Collection
Triglyceride Test requires a small blood sample.

Lab Analysis
The sample is analyzed in the lab using enzymatic methods to measure the concentration of triglycerides.

Turnaround Time
Results are normally available in 24-48 hours.

What are the symptoms that prompt this test?

The triglyceride test may be recommended if an individual exhibits symptoms of high triglycerides or has risk factors for heart disease. Symptoms and risk factors include:

  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Abdominal pain or discomfort (in severe cases)
  • Skin changes like xanthomas (fatty deposits under the skin)
  • Obesity or being overweight
  • Sedentary lifestyle or lack of exercise
  • Family history of high triglycerides or heart disease
  • Diabetes or insulin resistance
  • High alcohol consumption or smoking is also a risk factor.

What are Normal Ranges for This Test?

The normal ranges for this hormone can vary based on age, sex and time of the day the test is performed. The general accepted normal ranges are:

Infants – Less than 630 ng/dL (nanograms per deciliter) after birth with levels decreasing after first few days.
Children (pre puberty) – Less than 110 ng/dL for male and less than 100 ng/dL for females.
Adult Women – Less than 285 ng/dL for pre-menopausal women and less than 51 ng/dL for postmenopausal women.
Adult Men – Less than 220 ng/dL for males.

**The ranges may vary depending on the assay of test, time of day when sample was collected.**

What Happens if Test Results Show Abnormal Levels?

If triglyceride levels are abnormal further testing may be required to assess overall cardiovascular health. This may include additional lipid tests, blood glucose tests or liver function tests.

For high triglyceride levels, the doctor may recommend lifestyle changes such as:

  • Adopting a heart-healthy diet (low in saturated fats and sugars)
  • Increasing physical activity
  • Losing weight if overweight
  • Reducing alcohol consumption and quitting smoking

In some cases medications such as statins, fibrates or omega-3 fatty acids may be prescribed to lower triglyceride levels. Regular monitoring and follow-up tests will be recommended to track progress and adjust treatment as needed.
