What Is A TSH Test?

TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) plays a critical role in regulating the thyroid gland, which controls metabolism, energy production and overall body functions. TSH Test is primarily used to evaluate thyroid function and diagnose thyroid disorders such as hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) and hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid). TSH test is often the first step in assessing thyroid health. It is commonly ordered when a patient’s symptoms suggest a thyroid imbalance or as part of routine health checkups, especially when a person has risk factors such as family history of thyroid disease, autoimmune conditions or previous thyroid treatment. Doctors also use this test to monitor treatment effectiveness and adjust dosages as needed. By TSH test doctors can determine if the thyroid gland is working properly and identify potential issues early, allowing for timely intervention.

How is the Test Performed?

Sample Collection
TSH test requires a blood sample typically drawn from a vein in the arm.

Lab Analysis
Immunoassay techniques to measure the concentration of TSH in the sample. Results are reported in milli-international units per liter (mIU/L).

Turnaround Time
Results are normally available in a few days.

What are the symptoms that prompt this test?

The TSH test may be recommended when an individual exhibits symptoms of thyroid dysfunction or has risk factors for thyroid disorders.

Symptoms of Hypothyroidism (Underactive Thyroid)

  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Weight gain
  • Cold intolerance
  • Dry skin and hair loss
  • Depression or memory problems

Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism (Overactive Thyroid)

  • Weight loss
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat
  • Heat intolerance
  • Anxiety or irritability
    Tremors or sweating

Other Risk Factors

  • Family history of thyroid disease
  • Autoimmune conditions (Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or Graves’ disease)
  • Previous thyroid surgery or radiation therapy

What are Normal Ranges for This Test?

General reference ranges are:

Adults 0.4–4.0 mIU/L
Pregnant Women 0.1–2.5 mIU/L (varies by trimester)
There are no significant differences in normal ranges between men and women, but levels may fluctuate with age, pregnancy or other health conditions.

** Normal levels are dependent on a number of factors including age, gender, testing method and health condition of patient etc. Result interpretation should be done by a qualified doctor or healthcare professional.**

What Happens if Test Results Show Abnormal Levels?

If TSH levels are abnormal further testing may be required to determine the underlying cause. This may include additional thyroid tests:

Free T4 (Thyroxine) and Free T3 (Triiodothyronine) –To assess thyroid hormone levels.
Thyroid Antibody Tests –To diagnose autoimmune thyroid conditions like Hashimoto’s or Graves’ disease.
For high TSH levels (hypothyroidism) – Treatment typically involves thyroid hormone replacement therapy (levothyroxine) to restore normal hormone levels.

For low TSH levels (hyperthyroidism) – Treatment may include antithyroid medications, radioactive iodine therapy or surgery depending on the cause and severity.

The doctor will interpret the results in the context of the patient’s symptoms, medical history, and other test results to develop an appropriate treatment plan.
