What is Albumin?

Albumin is a vital protein produced by the liver. It plays a vital role in oncotic pressure to ensure that the fluids stay in the blood vessels, transporting hormones, vitamins, and, various other substances throughout the body. Albumin is also responsible for stabilizing blood circulation in case of heavy bleeding.

An albumin test is conducted to measure the amount of albumin present in the blood. Abnormal levels of albumin indicate the person is suffering from a poor health condition and needs early diagnosis and treatment.

How is the Test Performed?

The albumin test is a straightforward test involving a simple blood draw.

Preparation

  • Generally, fasting is not required although your doctor may prescribe you to fast based on your health condition.
  • Always inform your doctor about any medication you are taking to evaluate the results based on that.

Collection

  • A trained phlebotomist draws blood from the vein, typically, from the vein in the arm.
  • The sample is placed into a chemically treated tube to prevent sample degradation.

Lab Analysis

  • The sample is sent to the laboratory for the analysis of albumin in the blood.
  • The laboratory uses advanced techniques inc including spectrophotometry for, the analysis of albumin concentration.

What are the symptoms that prompt this test?

Doctors recommend this test when individuals show signs and symptoms of liver or kidney dysfunction, chronic inflammatory conditions, or malnutrition. Below some of the  symptoms of abnormal albumin levels are mentioned that prompt this test:

Symptoms indicative of Liver Disease

  • Pale stool
  • Darkening of urine
  • Swelling in the legs or abdomen (edema)
  • Weightloss without any known reason
  • Jaundice
  • Fatigue

Symptoms indicative of Kidney disease

  • Edema; Swelling of hands, feet, or, face
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Frequent and painful urination
  • Changes in the urine volume
  • Foamy or cloudy urine with bad a odor
  • High blood pressure
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

Symptoms indicative of Malnutrition or Inflammation

  • Poor wound healing
  • Extreme weight loss
  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Recurrent and chronic infections and inflammation

What are the Normal Ranges for This Test?

The normal ranges for this protein vary by age and gender. The generally accepted ranges are given below;

  • Infants – 8 to 3.1 g/dL.
  • Children (over 12 months) –5 to 5.0 g/dL
  • Adult Women – 4 to 5.4 g/dL
  • Adult Men –5 to 5.5 g/dL

**The ranges may vary depending on the assay of the test and the health factors of individuals.**

What Happens if Test Results Show Abnormal Levels?

Abnormal levels of protein albumin indicate an individual’s liver or kidney health is compromised. Your healthcare provider may recommend additional tests including liver function tests, kidney function tests, and assessments in case of malnutrition. The elevated or lowered levels of albumin suggest the following diseases are present in that person.

Elevated Albumin Levels

  • High levels of albumin are normally uncommon and may occur to dehydration.

Low Albumin Levels

  • Liver diseases including cirrhosis, fatty liver disease, and hepatitis
  • Kidney dysfunction as nephrotic syndrome may cause excessive albumin loss through urine
  • Malnutrition; Insufficient intake of proteins.

Treatment options are available according to the disease, liver disease management involves lifestyle changes and medications whereas for kidney disease medication, in severe cases dialysis and dietary changes are involved. In case of nutritional deficiencies, a well-balanced diet is suggested to balance the deficiencies.
