What is Amylase?
Amylase is an enzyme produced by the pancreas and salivary glands and is involved in the digestion of carbohydrates (complex sugars) into simpler sugar molecules for their absorption in the intestines easily. 3 types of amylase are present namely alpha amylase, beta amylase, and gamma amylase and targets different types of carbohydrates. When the pancreas or salivary glands are damaged or inflamed the amylase may leak into the urine or bloodstream.
An amylase test is performed to measure the amount of amylase present in blood or urine. This test is helpful in the diagnosis of pancreatic disorders, conditions associated with the salivary gland, and gastrointestinal diseases.
How is the Test Performed?
Amlayse test is performed using a urine sample or a blood sample. Both methods are simple and minimally invasive.
Preparation
- No preparation is required for the amylase test.
- Fasting is not mandatory for this test.
- Inform your healthcare provider about the medications or supplements you are taking as he may suggest avoiding certain medications.
Collection
- An experienced phlebotomist draws blood from your vein, typically from the arm with a needle, and transfers the blood sample in a vial or tube provided by the laboratory.
- Pressure and bandage are applied to the site from where the blood was drawn to stop any bleeding.
Laboratory Analysis
- Once the lab receives the sample, a technician will analyze the amylase level using methods such as ELISA or chemiluminescent immunoassay (CLIA) that provide accurate results.
What are the symptoms that prompt this test?
The amylase test is referred to individuals experiencing symptoms of gastrointestinal disorders, pancreatic issues, or salivary gland disorders. The common symptoms are listed below;
General symptoms
- Loss of appetite
- Unexplainable weight loss
- Jaundice
- Severe abdominal pain
- Fast heartbeat
- Foul and greasy stool
- Fever and chills
- History of pancreatic or gastrointestinal issues
What are Normal Ranges for This Test?
The normal range for the amylase test depends on the sample used for the analysis. The generally accepted reference range is given below;
- In blood – 30 to 110 U/L
- In urine – 6 to 21.2 IU/hr
**The normal range of amylase varies according to the assay of the test and varies between laboratories. Always consult your healthcare provider for the correct diagnosis and evaluation of the result.**
What Happens if Test Results Show Abnormal Levels?
Abnormal amylase levels indicate the compromised health condition of an individual. The person might be affected by the following diseases;
Elevated Levels of Amylase
- Pancreatitis; A sudden swelling of the pancreas
- Cancers; Ovarian, pancreatic, breast, colon, and lungs
- perforated ulcer
- intestinal blockage
- Appendicitis
- Salivary gland infection like mumps, salivary gland duct blockage
- Diabetic ketoacidosis
- Kidney problems
- Ruptured ectopic pregnancy
- Eating disorder
- Alcoholism
Low Levels of Amylase
- Chronic Pancreatitis
- Cystic fibrosis
- Liver disease
When abnormal levels of amylase are detected your healthcare provider may suggest follow-up tests including lipase tests, imaging studies, and genetic testing. Medications, timely intervention, and early treatment plans are important for the management and control of the disease.
