What is the Beta-hCG Test?

Beta human chorionic gonadotrophin hormone is a hormone produced by the placenta after the fertilization of the egg, and attaches to the uterine lining. This hormone is vital for sustaining the pregnancy as it maintains the corpus luteum in the early stages of pregnancy by producing a hormone called progesterone that supports fetal growth.

The beta-hCG test is conducted usually during the first trimester as the beta-hCG hormone levels rise significantly during this period and can be detected easily in the urine or blood. It is an important biomarker for the confirmation of the pregnancy. Abnormal beta-hCG levels indicate ectopic pregnancy, cancer, or other complications.

Preparation

  • Fasting is not required for the test
  • For confirming the pregnancy, it Is ideal to take the test a few days after missing the period.

  • Non-Pregnant Female – Less than 5 mIU/mL
  • Pregnant Female– More than 25 mIU/mL

What Happens if Test Results Show Abnormal Levels?

Elevated Levels of Beta-hCG

  • Multiple pregnancies i.e. twins or triplets
  • Unusual growth of placental tissues referred to as molar pregnancy
  • Cancers such as testicular, ovarian, or other beta-hCG-related cancers


Low Levels of Beta-hCG

  • Miscarriage
  • Implantation of the fetus outside the uterus, in the fallopian tube, this condition is known as ectopic pregnancy.
