What is the Beta-hCG Test?
Beta human chorionic gonadotrophin hormone is a hormone produced by the placenta after the fertilization of the egg, and attaches to the uterine lining. This hormone is vital for sustaining the pregnancy as it maintains the corpus luteum in the early stages of pregnancy by producing a hormone called progesterone that supports fetal growth.
The beta-hCG test is conducted usually during the first trimester as the beta-hCG hormone levels rise significantly during this period and can be detected easily in the urine or blood. It is an important biomarker for the confirmation of the pregnancy. Abnormal beta-hCG levels indicate ectopic pregnancy, cancer, or other complications.
How is the Test Performed?
Beta-hCG is a simple test that requires a small amount of blood.
Preparation
- Fasting is not required for the test
- For confirming the pregnancy, it Is ideal to take the test a few days after missing the period.
- Inform your healthcare provider about any medications you are taking that might influence the rest results
Collection
- A trained phlebotomist draws blood from the vein using a needle.
- The sample is then placed in a chemically treated tube to prevent the contamination or degradation of the blood sample.
- The blood sample is then sent to the laboratory.
Lab Analysis
- An experienced technician analyzes the sample using advanced techniques such as chemiluminescent immunoassay (CLIA) for the measurement of beta-hCG concentration for rapid and accurate results.
What are the symptoms that prompt this test?
The healthcare provider warrants this test in the following situations;
Symptoms of Pregnancy

- Missed menstruation/ period

What are Normal Ranges for This Test?
Beta-hCG test varies according to the stage of the pregnancy and the general health of an individual. The generally accepted reference ranges are mentioned below for pregnant and non-pregnant individuals;
- Males – below 2 mIU/mL
- Non-Pregnant Female – Less than 5 mIU/mL
- Pregnant Female– More than 25 mIU/mL
**The above-mentioned reference ranges are for general guidelines only and may vary according to the assay of the test used by the laboratory. Always consult your healthcare provider for the correct interpretation of the results.
What Happens if Test Results Show Abnormal Levels?
An elevated or lowered levels of beta-hCG depend on individual factors such as pregnancy or non-pregnancy or the abnormal levels might be due to some underlying health conditions. All the possible interpretations causing abnormal levels are mentioned below;
Elevated Levels of Beta-hCG
- Multiple pregnancies i.e. twins or triplets
- Unusual growth of placental tissues referred to as molar pregnancy
- Cancers such as testicular, ovarian, or other beta-hCG-related cancers
Low Levels of Beta-hCG
- Miscarriage
- Implantation of the fetus outside the uterus, in the fallopian tube, this condition is known as ectopic pregnancy.
When abnormal levels are detected follow-up tests are usually suggested including ultrasound imaging, serial beta-hCG test to monitor hormonal levels, and other hormonal tests.
