What is the Creatine Kinase (CK)?

Creatine Kinase (CK), also known as Creatine Phosphokinase (CPK), is an enzyme that is present in the muscle tissue, heart, and brain. The role is to catalyze the reaction of creatine and use ATP to produce energy for the muscle contraction. CK is released into the blood stream when muscle tissue is damaged and it is used as a marker to help diagnose muscle injury, heart problems and other related illnesses.

The major three categories of Creatine Kinase are:

  • CK-MM: This is the type of CK that is mostly found in skeletal muscles.
  • CK-MB: This is the type of CK that is mainly found in the heart muscle.
  • CK-BB: This is the type of CK that is mainly found in the brain.

Raised levels of CK, especially CK-MB, may suggest heart attacks, muscle injury or disease such as muscular dystrophy, while increase in CK-MM levels is associated with skeletal muscle injury or disease.

How is the Test Performed?

The test involves a simple blood-draw and is analyzed in the laboratory.

Preparation

  • The test does not require any special preparations
  • Keep your doctor informed about the medication, recent injury, or physical activities performed before the test.

Collection

  • A trained technologist draws blood from the vein typically from the arm.

Laboratory Analysis

  • The sample is analyzed using the technique of enzyme based immunoassay

What are the symptoms that prompt this test?

The following symptoms are seen in individuals with muscle damage, heart damage, or other associated disorders.

Symptoms Associated with Muscle Damage

  • Weakness of the muscles followed by pain
  • Swelling or cramping
  • Urine in a dark color
  • Movement difficulty of the muscle
  • Muscle injury or trauma

Symptoms Associated with Heart Condition

  • Pain in the chest
  • Shortness of breath
  • Heartbeat with an irregular rhythm
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue without a known reason

General Symptoms

  • Balance or coordination difficulty
  • Stroke
  • Muscle injury or disorder

What are Normal Ranges for This Test?

The generally accepted reference range for the creatine kinase is mentioned below however it may vary according to the assay of the test used by the laboratory.

  • Adult Men – 52 to 336 U/L
  • Adult Women – 38 to 176 U/L
  • Children – 24 to 170 U/L

**The above mentioned values are for general guidelines only. Always consult your healthcare provider for the correct interpretation of the results. **

What Happens if Test Results Show Abnormal Levels?

Elevated levels of creatine kinase indicates the presence of underlying conditions;

  • Heart attack
  • Muscle injury
  • Neurological disorders
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Kidney failure
  • Infection

If abnormalities are diagnosed further testing such as ECG, imaging studies, and genetic testing is suggested along with medications, therapy and lifestyle changes to identify the underlying condition for early management or diagnosis.
